The 18 mile line runs through the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors Park between Pickering and Grosmont where you can connect for Whitby. The railway is famous for being a setting in the ex-TV programme Heartbeat. Many of the places along the railway are inaccessible by any other means of transport. The line is steeply graded, therefore only main line locomotives are used on service trains. The public are permitted to view the service and storage sheds at Grosmont, accessed through the oldest railway tunnel in the world.
